Poster Stamp Pages on this site

      This page displays all 19 sets of World War II Poster Stamps with war related themes that I know about, and that were published in the U.S. Some of these poster stamps have been applied to World War II era FDC's, some have been used as part of the designs of World War II Patriotic Covers listed by Lawrence Sherman, and some have not been seen attached to any canceled cover. The sets with no separate page for them, yet, are still works-in-progress. Except as noted with {...}, special stamp albums were published to house each set of stamps, including one set spread out over six albums.
      FYI, for stamp numbers used in filenames, "7a" is a used stamp on cover, and "7b" is a mint stamp, i.e., I do not collect used (no gum) single poster stamps, on- or off-paper.
      FYI: All PDF files on this page were created (using the .jpg files I scanned) by the free on-line software: "Merge PDF Files Online" by Sejda

      Also included on this page is information about one set of Poster Stamps issued for the 1939 New York World's Fair which were also overprinted for the 1940 New York World's Fair.

  1. #Adpress -- Adpress, Baltimore, MD Poster Stamps (1942)
          From the Hakes 7-18-2012 auction lot description: Each is 1.75x2". Each stamp has 1942 copyright "The Adpress Baltimore." Morry Greener Collection. {Per the Feb. 1942 issue of the Poster Stamp Bulletin, there were 6 poster stamps in this set, so it is unlikely an album was ever made for these stamps. As I have seen only one of these stamps on a 1942-1945 cover, no separate page is planned for these stamps.}
          Also displayed is a 1917 WW I ad from this printing company located at 28-30 S. Paca St. This company was owned by Baltimore Talking Board Factory, which was located next door at 36-38 S. Paca St, Baltimore, MD .

  2. #AFSF -- "American Flying Services Foundation" Poster Stamps (1942)
          This 8" x 19-3/4" AFSF complete sheet I own, although intact, is in very poor shape with numerous tears and perforation separations. {With only 5 different stamps per sheet of 50, it is unlikely an abum was ever made for these stamps. As I have not seen any of these stamps on any 1942-1945 cover, no separate page is planned for these stamps.}

          A4V {I have not seen an album for these stamps. However, the back of each stamp states: "For the complete collection, with special mounting, send One Dollar." I have seen no example of this "special mounting".}

  9. #Seagram -- Seagram-Distillers Corp. Poster Stamps (4 stamps)
          {With only 4 different stamps per sheet of 16, it is unlikely an album was ever made for these stamps. As I have not seen any of these stamps on any 1942-1945 cover, no separate page is planned for these stamps.}
          Per the Oct. 1942 issue of the Poster Stamp Bulletin, there was a second set of four "Loose Lips" stamps, but I can't find any examples of them. All I found was a Seagram poster that looks like it was the source of their "Stop Rumors" stamp, and a second Seagram poster reproduced on a postcard.

  12. #So42 "The Spirit of '42" Stamp Album for Poster Stamps Poster Stamps -- These stamps have been seen on many 1942-1945 covers. The Los Angeles Times album cover has a white star at the bottom. The second album cover replaced the newspaper's name with three stars and added a red dot in the middle of the white star at the bottom. I just ordered the red dot album. I do not know, yet, how else it is different (TBA).
          Also, I have one eBay scan of imperforate stamps, but I have not seen any in person. Every off-cover mint stamp I have seen is perforated. Every stamp I have seen on cover has had the white border trimmed off, so it is not possible to determine whether the stamp had perfs or not. Except for about five unaddressed covers with these stamps, every other cover I have seen (30+) was hand addressed in pencil to: Mae Weigand.

          This related label is an add-on to a pre-war 4-03-1938 (U.S.S. Portland) cover. It is the same eagle that appears on the back of the album. I have not seen another copy of this label.

          These stamps were not printed in sheets of 48 different, but in sheets of 12 with 3 designs each. One album I have has unmounted verticle strips of three stamps. I do not know how the 16 different sheets of 12 were sold. Each sheet is larger than the album.

  21. #Unidentified -- Unidentified war themed Poster Stamps from other possible multi-design sets. -- Except as shown, I have not seen any other of these stamps on any 1942-1945 cover. As I can't identify any stamp in this section, I have no proof that they were all printed and sold in the U.S. during World War II, and not in some other country or some other time period.

  22.       The ArtSwallow Store website shows over 250 different World War II Posters. How many were also published as Poster Stamps during 1940-1945?
          Thanks to the The Stamp Forum (TSF) / CINDERELLAS / Propaganda and Patriotic Cinderellas for some of the poster stamps displayed above.

    Other non- World War II Poster Stamps of interest to me:

  23. #1939WF -- 1939 New York World's Fair Poster Stamps (54 different) -- many of which appear on Planty listed #853 FDC's.
          Actually there are 108 different Poster Stamps, because left over sheets of stamps were overprinted for the 1940 New York World's Fair. So far, I have not seen any of these overprints on any FDC or any other 1940 or later cover.
          My only interest in these stamps is because they are pictured for Planty Numbers 16, 17, 18, 19, 62 and 102 on pages 31-33, 44 and 51 of
    Planty Photo Encyclopedia of Cacheted First Day Covers, 2nd edition, Volume XVI, 1939 (2004). There are numerous other Poster Stamps issued for the 1939 and 1940 New York World's Fairs which are unknown on any FDC's, so I have no interest in them. Specifically designed for using these Poster Stamps, four different #853 FDC cachets are shown here.

    1939 New York World's Fair Poster Stamps on #853 FDC's
          The above page, in addition to displaying every #853 First Day Cover I have seen that includes a 1939 Poster Stamp, also displays every individual overprinted 1940 Poster Stamp, none of which have been seen on any canceled cover, FDC or otherwise.
          There is also a project that I have not even started, and I probably won't do it. Pages 68, 78 and 90-93 of Planty's 2nd ed. Volume XVI shows ten #854 First Day Covers with a 1939 Poster Stamp. I have not seen a single example of any of these covers.

  24. #Laird -- Clarence E., and Eugene C., Laird Poster Stamps -- I have seen 11 different sheets of Poster Stamps by the Lairds, but I have not seen any of these stamps on any canceled cover.
          My primary interests in the Lairds are their 1935-1937 "Winding Trails Magazine", and their 1929-1937 First Day Cover cachets. Their First and Last Cachets are shown here.

  25. #AHSC -- American-Hawaiian Steamship Company Poster Stamps -- I have not seen any of these stamps on any canceled cover.
          My primary interest in this company is that someone serviced their business Corner Cards as First Day Covers. One example is shown here.
